這首〈I can't tell you why 〉大家應該耳熟能詳，〈I can't tell you why 〉這首歌收錄在老鷹合唱團 80 年代解散前最後一張錄音室專輯〈The long run 〉裡，作曲者為 1977 年才加入的貝斯手 Timothy B. Schmit 提摩西斯密特，也由他主唱這首歌，倒是那迷人的吉他獨奏出自誰的手筆，網路上頗有一番論戰……老鷹的五位團員中原本就有二位優秀的吉他手，Don Felder 和 Joe Walsh，〈 Hotel California〉精采的雙吉他就是他們倆的傑作。

很多樂迷認為〈I can't tell you why 〉的吉他出自唐菲爾德，因為 1994 年演唱會中就是由他彈奏，但經過一番考證，才發現是由另一位團員 Glenn Frey 葛倫佛萊擔綱，1979 的唱片內頁中就明白寫著葛倫佛萊為這首歌的主奏吉他手，1994 年演唱會中唱這首歌時，他退居彈奏電鋼琴，由唐菲爾德彈奏吉他的部分。
