這首《調情聖手》西洋歌曲，在筆者初次聆聽的那個年代，總是翻譯成《溫柔的接線生》，原因一點也不奇怪，就是英文歌名直譯罷了，Smooth Operator直接翻成《溫柔的接線生》是我們那個年代的英文水平，就好像〈Slow Hand〉硬是譯成「慢手」那樣的不知所云……嗯～這兩首歌剛好是筆者高中與國中時代的西洋歌曲，高中時的英文程度相對於國中高了許多，仔細去了解歌詞的涵意，總覺得Smooth不見得是溫柔，Operator也不像接線生……後來才知道Smooth有「高手」的味道，Operator也可當成操作……所以譯成《調情聖手》才是正確的。
《調情聖手》的主唱是Sade，為英非混血兒，父親是奈及利亞，母親為英國籍，她本身外型神祕、性感集美艷於一身，歌聲也極富磁性，唱片公司即以她做為宣傳重點，並於1984 年發行首張專輯〈Diamond Life〉而〈Smooth Operator〉就是收錄於此張唱片之中，〈Smooth Operator〉這首歌講述了一個在上流社會四處放電、騙取感情和金錢的獵豔男子之故事，歌詞第一句Diamond life 也成了專輯名稱，足見這首歌的重要性，歌曲風格融合了爵士、靈魂和節奏藍調，也有樂評盛讚他們為新爵士。
