流行樂壇的團體不勝枚舉，而以地名當作團名的更不算多，能夠揚名立萬的更屬少數，成名於 70 年代的 Kansas 堪薩斯合唱團算是代表之一，而且據說是第一個以美國地名當團名的搖滾團體。1976 年，走藝術搖滾路線的 Kansas 以第四張專輯中的暢銷曲 "  Carry onwayward son "終於在排行榜上嶄露頭角，樂團不久以後隨即開始錄製下一張專輯。當整張專輯錄製接近尾聲，有一天，團中靈魂人物 Kerry Livgren 拿起木吉他，唱出一首他最近完成的歌給團員們聽，這首歌就是" Dust inthe wind 風中之塵 “。

這首歌的寫作靈感來自 Kerry Livgren 閱讀的一本詩集，是位具有原住民血統的美國詩人的作品，其中有一行詩句《 For all we are is dust in the wind 》，令他思及人生在世，無論賢昧智愚、風光落魄，終需一死，感嘆之餘，寫下了這首醒世歌曲，由於和樂團過去作品的風格差異頗大，Kerry Livgren 並不準備將這一首作品放在專輯裡，孰料四位團員聽過之後，異口同聲表示非錄製這首歌不可。於是在大家的堅持下，這首歌終於收錄在" Pointof no return “這張專輯中。

Dust in the wind 風中之塵是他們第一首不插電的歌曲，雖然是趕上末班車，卻成為堪薩斯合唱團最受歡迎的單曲。在熱門榜上最高有第六名的席次，在搖滾、鄉村和成人抒情榜也都大有斬獲，是 70 年代最具代表性的歌曲之一。即便是現今的西洋老歌合輯，它很少會被遺漏，對有志於學習民謠吉他的朋友們，這首歌也是必練的曲目之一。
