這首歌是丹佛格柏獻給父親勞倫斯佛格柏的作品，描述了父親對音樂的熱愛所帶給他的影響，表達出對父親最深的感謝。丹佛格柏的父親，從帶領家鄉伊利諾州的高中樂隊開始音樂生涯，母親則是位聲樂家，也帶領一個合唱團。二人婚後育有三個兒子，丹佛格柏是老么，出生於1951年。當時父親已是 Bradley University 布萊德利大學的樂隊指揮，經常帶領樂隊參加各式音樂會，和籃球、美式足球比賽的表演。

丹佛格柏常對別人說起一段兒時回憶，當時他才四歲，父親有一次讓他拿起指揮棒去指揮整個樂隊演奏。雖然是父親站在他的身後掌控一切，丹佛格柏回憶道：那種感覺真是棒極了，神奇而充滿力量，而且我一點都不害怕。" Leader of the band "在1979年就已錄好，丹佛格柏卻覺得這首歌過於感傷，不願發表，因此並未收在該年發行的《Phoenix 鳳凰》專輯。直到1981年，他才決定收錄在《The Innocent Age 純真年代》這張專輯。

這首歌被選為單曲發行後，最高名次為百大單曲榜的第九名。寫這首歌時，丹佛格柏從未想過它會是一首排行金曲。丹佛格柏在歌中直接說出對父親的感謝，却代替許多人明白表達出對自己父親的敬愛，也使這首歌成為一首歷久彌新的感人佳作。

歌詞中" Thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go "，是指丹佛格柏決定從大學休學這件事。當時他就讀伊利諾大學香檳分校，讀不到一學期就決定休學去玩音樂，父親失望之餘，卻也支持他的選擇，給了他一年的時間去嘗試。丹佛格柏獨自開車到了洛杉磯，沒多久就得到一紙唱片合約，後來成為一位成功的藝人。很特別的是，歌曲間奏中有一小部份是他的父親改編進行曲之王蘇沙的作品" The Washington Post華盛頓郵報 "的片段，由南加州大學軍樂隊演奏。1982 年八月，丹佛格柏的父親因病過世，聽到兒子為自己寫了一首歌，任誰心裡都會少了一個遺憾才對！
