曾有評論指出〈500 miles〉可能和古老的民謠〈900 miles〉有關，而〈900 miles〉這首歌又源自美國南方的青草地音樂 / bluegrass歌謠〈Reuben's train〉和〈Train 45〉，〈500 miles〉演唱的版本很多，六十年代美國的民謠復興時期中，稍有名氣的團體或歌手幾乎都唱過，但商業成績最出色的是男歌手 Bobby Bare 巴比貝爾在 1963 年的錄音，最高曾升到百大單曲榜第十名，他的版本歌詞經過修改，歌名為〈500 miles away from home 〉，也許這是台灣將這首歌通譯為〈離家五百哩〉的主要原因，但許多西洋老歌合輯裡收錄的大多是彼得、保羅與瑪麗的版本。

註：〈離家五百哩〉傳唱至今有多個語言版本的翻唱，包括孟加拉語、芬蘭語、德語、法語、日語、斯洛維尼亞語、越南語、印度語……當然也有國語……。
